  • WYSF/WWMM Format Change Information - July/August 2008

  • You may have found this website looking for Birmingham's WYSF ("The New 94-5 FM") or WWMM ("Live 100.5"). There has been quite a bit of traffic through this site during the past couple of weeks, so I'll share with you what I know.

Following the fireworks music extravaganza on July 4, Citadel Broadcasting (the owner of the two stations) dropped WYSF's hot adult contemporary format it began around Memorial Day of last year. At the time, the station began airing country music without any type of actual branding being employed. The music was primarily uninterrupted except for a top of the hour ID required by the FCC and a commercial here and there. The country music programming continued throughout the weekend, until early Monday morning, July 7 when the country music programming was replaced by a simulcast of co-owned sports outlet, "Jox 100.5", WJOX. However, at 6 pm the same day, WYSF reverted back to country programming. This was short-lived, though, as the station went back to its simulcast of WJOX the following morning. For the following couple of weeks, WYSF used this dayparted format of sports during the day and country at night, the only exception being on weekends when country music was offered exclusively.

On Monday, July 21, WYSF dropped the hybrid sports/country programming and permanently moved its JOX sports format to the 94.5 frequency. It was announced that WYSF and WJOX would simulcast for a two-week period, and a new format for 100.5 would be announced and put into place. On Thursday, July 31, the WJOX call letters were moved to the 94.5 frequency as well, and new calls of WWMM were assigned to the 100.5 frequency. On Monday, August 11, WWMM dropped its sports simulcast with WJOX and began rebroadcasting Citadel's classic rock station in Birmingham, WZRR "Rock 99-5". Citadel also announced that WWMM's new format would debut Friday morning. August 15, following a special presentatation of Reg's Coffee House. At 10:05 am the morning of August 15, WWMM officially changed to an Adult Album Alternative (AAA) format as "Live 100.5".
